Happy Birthday Salvador Dali May 11th 1904 - 1989 One of my all time favorite Artists. Salvador Dali with Baubu his pet Ocelot Salvador's work has always captivated me but I sometimes think I'm more captivated by his eccentricities and flamboyant nature especially when it cam to shocking people. Born in Figueres Spain May 11th 1904 Dali believed he was the reincarnation of his older brother. His brother died during childbirth just nine months before he was born. It appears that when Dali was 5 his parents took him to visit his brother’s grave where they told him they believed he was the reincarnation of his deceased brother, a little weird but okay anyway Dali believed that from that day on. Swans Reflecting Elephants courtesy of unknown Gala his wife was aslo Dali's business manager although I'm not sure if this was before or after they were married but apparently they were married in a "city hall" type wedding in 1934 and were remarried again in a Catholic ceremony in 1958. A very young Gala Courtesy of elcaudecati.blogspot.com.es The story goes that he bought her a castle in Spain however he himself wasn't allowed to visit her at the castle until after obtaining her permission in writing. Although he's primarily known for painting he was also knowledgeable in sculpting, photography and Drafting - never knew he was into photography. THE PHONE with Lobster A collaboration by Dali and Edward James in 1936 only four copies exist. Photo Courtesy of The Guardian.com Sometime during the 1940's Dali dedicated a lot of his time to creating with a variety of materials and designed jewelry, clothes, furniture, stage sets for plays and ballet including display windows for retail stores. At one retail store the story goes that he became so enraged with work he didn't authorize that he shoved a a decorative bathtub through the glass window... Oopsie. This is one of my favorite pics of Dali with his wife Gala. Photo courtesy of unknown One if not his most recognized paintings: The Persistence of Memory... Photo courtesy of All That Is Interesting. Dali continued to paint her as they both aged, producing sympathetic and adoring images of his muse. I'm not sure where I learned this but they had an open marriage which must have been true because it justifies this statement. Gala seemed to tolerate Dali's alliances with younger muses, secure in her own position as his primary relationship. Did you see the detail of this pic?
