Nina Simone !!!
Nina is one of my favorite musical Artists'.
If you remember the movie The Thomas Crown Affair one of her songs - Sinnerman - was featured in that movie and is one of my favorite songs.
Nina Simone was born Eunice Kathleen Waymon February 21, 1933. Her father was a preacher and was one of eight children.
She began playing piano at the age of three and performed at her local church.
At 12 she had her first concert debut at Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia.
Song - My Baby Just Cares For Me.
She played in a small bar earning a meager living and eventually adopted the stage name "Nina Simone" knowing her mother would not approve of the music she was singing because her mother saw it as playing the "Devil's Music".
Up until the late 50's she recorded George Gershwin's "I Loves You, Porgy" from Porgy and Bess. Her first album was Little Girl Blue .
She really hit the music scene in the mid 1960's when she openly addressed racial inequality with a song called "Mississippi Goddam" in response to the June 12th bombing of the 16th Street Baptist Church in Birmingham 1963.
Some southern states boycotted the song.
In 1970 Nina Simone left to Barbados, recorded in 1974 and didn't record again until 1978 then moved to Europe.
In 1984 she recorded Live at Ronnie Scott's Jazz Club a venue in London.
Song - I put a spell on You
She lived in Switzerland and the Netherlands before settling in the South of France in 1993.
Nina published her autobiography I Put a Spell on You in 1992 and in 1993 recorded her last album - A Single Woman.
She continued to tour through the 1990's but I believe it was mostly through Europe and Canada only.
Song - Feeling Good
She suffered with breast cancer for several years before she passed away in her sleep in 2003.
Rest in peace Nina,
you're songs continue to play through the speakers on my devices at home or in our cars.
