Happy Birthday Salvador Dali May 11th 1904 - 1989 One of my all time favorite Artists. Salvador Dali with Baubu his pet Ocelot Salvador's work has always captivated me but I sometimes think I'm more captivated by his eccentricities and flamboyant nature especially when it cam to shocking people. Born in Figueres Spain May 11th 1904 Dali believed he was the reincarnation of his older brother. His brother died during childbirth just nine months before he was born. It appears that when Dali was 5 his parents took him to visit his brother’s grave where they told him they believed he was the reincarnation of his deceased brother, a little weird but okay anyway Dali believed that from that day on. Swans Reflecting Elephants courtesy of unknown Gala his wife was aslo Dali's business manager although I'm not sure if this was before or after they were married but apparently they were married in a "city hall" type wedding in 1934 and were remarried again in a Catholic ceremony in 1958. Photo courtesy of The Red List. A very young Gala Courtesy of elcaudecati.blogspot.com.es The story goes that he bought her a castle in Spain however he himself wasn't allowed to visit her at the castle until after obtaining her permission in writing. Although he's primarily known for painting he was also knowledgeable in sculpting, photography and Drafting - never knew he was into photography. THE PHONE with Lobster A collaboration by Dali and Edward James in 1936 only four copies exist. Photo Courtesy of The Guardian.com Sometime during the 1940's Dali dedicated a lot of his time to creating with a variety of materials and designed jewelry, clothes, furniture, stage sets for plays and ballet including display windows for retail stores. At one retail store the story goes that he became so enraged with work he didn't authorize that he shoved a a decorative bathtub through the glass window... Oopsie. This is one of my favorite pics of Dali with his wife Gala. Photo courtesy of unknown One if not his most recognized paintings: The Persistence of Memory... Photo courtesy of All That Is Interesting. Dali continued to paint her as they both aged, producing sympathetic and adoring images of his muse. I'm not sure where I learned this but they had an open marriage which must have been true because it justifies this statement. Gala seemed to tolerate Dali's alliances with younger muses, secure in her own position as his primary relationship. Did you see the detail of this pic? Why do I like to paint with acrylics? Very simple, it dries quickly. Acrylics dry quickly which keeps me on my toes, I'm not a methodical thinker I like to make any corrections to the paint on the canvas immediately. I've disliked oil paint since I was a kid when I painted with oils for the first time. The next morning I checked to see if my painting was dry... it wasn't, it was still wet and I ruined my own painting. I prefer to have my paintings completely dry in a few days not two months. Acrylic paint will feel dry to the touch on canvas as soon as 8 hours after painting it depending on the size of the canvas but it may need another week to dry completely before varnishing. So who told you buying Original Art Work is only for the wealthy elite? Who told you that? I think a lot of people think Original Art Work is only sold in prominent auction houses like Christie's or Sotheby's or in local art galleries, wrong. Maybe 25 years ago but not today. Flowers in a Clay Pot you can view more details about this painting here. You can buy Original Art Work, I think any one can, check this out... If you earn a living of some sort, or you can afford to pay your cell phone and/or car payment whatever I would say you can afford to buy a Original Painting or any other piece of fine art. Before we had on-line shopping at our finger tips Artists had no choice but to go through an Art gallery to sell their paintings, the Artist would have to jack up the price on their Art Work because once the gallery sold that particular piece of Art they would keep half the dollar amount of what the painting was sold for and this is how galleries have made their money and still do because there are artists out there who are more comfortable selling through galleries and that's fine because that's their choice. So unlike 10 years ago as an Artist we don't have to sell our art through Art Galleries we can sell our Art online directly to our customers at much more affordable prices. If you really like the work of an Artist but you can't afford to fork out a huge chunk of change just reach out to the artist and let them how much you love their work and that you want to buy one of their paintings but that you can't afford the entire dollar amount at the moment. That artist may offer you installments for the purchase, I know several artists (including myself) that breakdown the cost of a painting into 2-3 installments for you to purchase. Obviously each artist is different and some won't be open but most Artists that I know will, especially if their serious artists' with a passion for the Arts, but if you don't ask you'll never know. I've had people ask me why my paintings are expensive, they're actually reasonably priced but I wanted to share this post because I'm not sure how much I've shared about my work. I can only speak for myself I don't know how other Artists work but when I start each painting my goal is to create a painting that is made to last a lifetime and when the owner opens the box I want that individual to be excited to display right away. Each painting has been created with brush strokes guided not only by my hands but by my heart. It's a part of me that is being transferred onto a piece of canvas, paper or wood. Did you know that often times when you buy a print, poster, etc from a Big Box Store you can end up paying more for that mass produced item than you would for an original painting. Another thing you probably didn't know is that reproductions are made with really cheap inks which give reproductions a flat and dull look where as an original painting created with quality paint and mediums will look fresh and last you a lifetime. Quality materials are important to me, again I'm only speaking for myself but I want anyone investing in my work to get the best for their money, that means I use Golden Paints products, they stand behind their product and I love their texture. Golden Paints is not sponsoring me for mentioning them I just enjoy their product and my collectors deserve to know what product I use. I don't know about you but it's so hard for me to believe that we're headed into May next month, a busy month for so many with Prom's, Graduation Ceremonies, Prepping for June weddings etc. Just in case you forgot Mother's Day is also in May... So my mother is fairly easy to shop for, she has quite the sweet tooth so I always get a combination of quality chocolates and grocery store candy. So far that's worked pretty well - At 95 I think you have the right to eat and drink whatever the hell you dam well please hahahaha. On the other hand if you're like my husband he has a much harder time with Mother's Day because he always feels that buying flowers for her on Mothers Day is so repetitious. He sends her flowers every year for Mothers Day and wonders if his Mom thinks "well thanks for putting so much thought into my gift, you've been sending me flowers for years". Needless to say he now sends her one of flower paintings because he knows that she's not only enjoys it but he knows the gift she's receiving is not only hand-made but it's going to last her a lifetime unlike flowers that may last a week and a half (if you're lucky). A friend of mine has purchased a painting similar to the one above with a switch out in a couple of colors which is another awesome point to buying your Mom an original painting, it's going to be unique and there will never be another like it. So if you're thinking of buying a painting with a different color other than what is currently on a painting on my website just let me know, there's still plenty of time to order your painting. Customization is limited depending on the colors ( some colors need additional layers of paint which in turn will require longer drying time ) if you think an original painting would be gift your Mom would appreciate contact me to learn more about requesting a certain color of flower or vase, or if you have any other questions just contact me here. I've always been a sucker for learning new things... reading has always been one of my favorite things but Podcasts and Audio-books make life so much easier because I usually listen to either one while I'm painting. Here are a few of my favorite podcasts that I listen to: For growth and personal development: Brendon shares his story of sacrifice and struggle, from an awful accident that left him severely injured and hospitalized to reaching success and going bankrupt to reaching his new goals through determination and perseverance which make him the man he is today. Listening his podcasts makes you realize that focus, determination and perseverance is all you need to achieve your goals. Tony is probably the motivational speaker I've been following for about the last 20 years, he's definitely one of the greats in my opinion in the area of motivational teaching and coaching. For Business... And Advice on how to plan and achieve your goals through their own personal experience as business owners along with guests that provide further tips for entrepreneurs. Great advice from guest speakers familiar with different types of social media platforms and how to best utilize for your business. What are your favorite Podcasts? Thanks for visiting Marti The other day I was asked about Art on Paper ... what exactly is it and why do artists use it for paintings? A pretty good question so I felt I should do a post on it. So Art on Paper is just that... A painting on paper, painting on paper has actually been around since the 2nd Century in China where paper was invented. After paper made it's way to Europe and was produced/manufactured obviously it was used for various purposes but Pablo Picasso and Georges Braque started experimenting and creating with paper for their Artwork by creating collage which is the layering of paper onto paper to create thick creations of art, aka Mixed Media. Today the Artist creates with the preferred methods or products of their choice and more often than not includes a variety of products on one paper painting. So for example aside from paint I may use paint pens or different types of mediums for a particular affect. There are pro's and con's with Original Artwork on Paper but I think it's all a matter of personal preference. The most popular reason why my clients purchase my Paintings on Paper is price and versatility. The cost of quality Artist paper is much more affordable than that of cotton canvas also Art on Paper can be framed in just about any type of frame from a very expensive frame to a very simple affordable frame depending on the size and the look your going for. For further reading on buying Original Artwork on Paper I added this article from Christie's . If you have more questions about paintings on paper just contact me. Thanks for visiting. |
